Z drive missing? How to connect on your new computer

If your Z drive is missing or asks you to sign in on a new People Inc computer, follow these steps to connect to your shared files.

You will need the username and password you used to sign into your old People Inc computer. These may be different from the account you use for email or to sign into your new computer.

Connect to the Z drive for the first time

  1. Make sure you are connected to the People Inc staff network at your office or group home.
  2. Double-click Connect Z Drive on your desktop. If you do not see it, open Start, search for Z Drive, and open it.
  3. If your files open right away, you are already connected. Otherwise, enter your Old computer username and Old computer password.
  4. Check the username that is filled in. Change it if your old computer username had an extra letter or number. Enter only the username, such as jsmith2. The People Inc domain is added automatically; you do not need to type your full email address or a domain.
  5. Leave Remember my credentials on this Windows profile selected if you want Windows to remember this connection for your own sign-in on this computer.
  6. Click Connect. Your Z drive should open.

Each person using a shared computer must connect while signed into Windows with their own account. Use your own old computer account.

Open your files after you have connected

Open File Explorer (the folder icon), select This PC, and double-click the Z: drive.

The Connect Z Drive desktop icon disappears after a successful connection. This is normal. Your Z drive is still available in File Explorer, and you can also search for Z Drive in Start.

If you cannot connect

  • Username or password not accepted: Use the account you used to sign into your old People Inc computer. Check for any extra letters or numbers in that username. Your email password may be different.
  • Server or network unavailable: Check that you are on the People Inc staff network. If you are away from a People Inc location, contact IT for help connecting.
  • No Connect Z Drive icon or Start result: The setup may not have reached your computer yet. If neither option is available, submit an IT ticket.
  • A message says another account is already connected: Save your work, sign out of Windows, sign back in, and open Connect Z Drive (or search for Z Drive in Start) before opening shared files.
  • The drive opens, but a folder says Access denied: Submit an IT ticket and tell us which folder you need.

Still need help?

Submit a ticket with Z drive in the subject. Include your computer name, your location, and the exact error message or a screenshot. Tell us whether you can see Connect Z Drive on the desktop or Z Drive in Start. Never include your password in a ticket or screenshot.
