Microsoft Print to PDF does not create a file: use Save as PDF and report the fault

Use this guide when: you select Microsoft Print to PDF and click Print, but no PDF seems to be created. This is a file-saving feature, not a paper printer.

1. Check whether it is waiting for a save location

  1. Look for a save/file-name window behind the document or other open windows.
  2. If a save window appears, choose an approved People Incorporated folder you can access, enter a clear file name, and save.
  3. Open that location and confirm the PDF exists. Open the PDF and check the pages you intended to save.

2. Use an available Save as PDF option

If Print to PDF still does not produce a file, use the application’s Save as PDF or Export to PDF option if it offers one. In a browser’s Print window, a Save as PDF destination may also be available. The exact menu varies by application.

  1. Select the required pages or full document.
  2. Save into an approved work folder with a recognizable name.
  3. Open the saved file and check the page count, orientation, and readability.

A previous People Incorporated requester was able to use Save as PDF while Microsoft Print to PDF was being investigated.

3. Let IT handle feature repairs

IT has discussed removing and re-enabling the Microsoft Print to PDF Windows feature as a repair approach. Do not change Windows features or use an administrator account yourself. That approach was not confirmed as the final fix in the reviewed ticket, so IT should diagnose the current fault first.

Do not use a public online PDF converter for documents containing employee, client, or other confidential information.

Check the result

You should have a PDF you can open from the intended work folder, with the correct pages. If the fallback works but Microsoft Print to PDF does not, tell IT both results.

Still need help?

Submit an IT support ticket and include the source app, device name, whether a save window appears, intended work folder, and whether Save as PDF works. If a previous ticket is resolved or closed, start a new ticket and mention its number.
